Monuments in Hampi

Hampi is a treasure trove of Monuments – Monolithic Statues, Temples, Palaces, Water bodies, Royal Enclosures, Fortifications, Watch Towers, etc. We have made an attempt to cover as many as we can from a large list of over 120 different monuments that exist in Hampi.

The oldest temple in Hampi that pre-dates the Vijayanagara Period is a marvel and a treasure of art, divinity and science.

This temple is believed to have been the private place of worship for the Royal family and contains episodes from Ramayana carved on its walls.

A bath / swimming pool meant for the Royalty of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is part of the Royal Enclosure and on the way to Manahavami Dibba and Lotus Mahal.

Lord Hanuman was born to Anjanadevi atop this hill known as Rishyamukha Hill or Anjanadri Hill. A climb to the top will give you a bird’s eye view of Hampi’s breathtaking landscape and monuments.

Situated on the bank of river Tungabhadra at Chakrateertha, Kodanda Rama Temple is a must visit for religious purposes.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu worshipped here as Thiruvengalanatha but the temple never saw the light of day due to the battles that led to downfall of Vijayanagara Empire. Yet the temple is definitely worth a visit due to its architecture and expanse. 

Built during the reign of King Krishna Deva Raya, this temple never completed during the reign of Vijayanagara Empire. Even after taking about 40 years, the temple never saw worship due to the downfall of Vijayanagara Empire. Such was the scale of this project and you wouldn’t want to miss the mesmerizing views and architecture of this temple.

In these two adjacent temples, the sculptors could achieve in grandiose what they could not achieve in finesse. One dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s fourth avatar of human body and Lion face and the other shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva with the name literally translating to “poor woman’s temple”.
